From her earliest days as a teenage radio station intern, Janine Scalise has had a passion for the visual aspects of music. Now she’s bringing her vast and multifaceted experience from 14 years as a music executive at Starz Networks to a new role as an independent music supervisor.

“My very first film production project in high school was cutting Desert Storm footage to Rage Against the Machine,” she said. “Putting together music with images just sent shivers down my spine. It was crystal clear to me that I was making sense of the visual aspects of music.”

Unusually, Janine handled the music needs for both Starz’ marketing team and its TV shows, serving as lead creative music executive for Starz Original series and marketing campaigns including “Power,” “VIDA,” “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” and image/brand OTT spots. She has worked on hundreds of promos and trailers, for all of which she both sourced the music and cleared the songs.

Now Janine has launched Moxie Music as a one-stop shop for all elements of music supervision, music licensing, procuring original songs from artists, and related consulting; offering all of her expertise in both the art and business of joining music with visual entertainment mediums.

Having long held hybrid positions that straddled the creative and business sides of music supervision, Janine is uniquely placed to navigate strategic music licensing negotiations, procurement of original songs, curation, label and publishing relations, budgeting and more.

A solution-oriented multi-tasker with strong communication skills, Janine thinks outside the box to bring music to visuals within real-world budgets and time frames, yet without ever compromising either art. A deep knowledge of the creative production process allows her to identify appropriate music/lyrics against footage and scripts, even on the tightest deadlines.

“I’ve been on the other side, so I know what the network/studio executives expect on their end,” she explained. “I’m that great middleman between the production and the network/studio, who can handle everything and execute everything properly.”

Janine did it all at Starz, including single-handedly creating a music department and spearheading the formation of the network’s music publishing arm. Both right- and left-brained, she simultaneously sourced/assessed creative direction and provided business affairs function while leading diverse projects across multiple forms of media.

She gained in-depth experience with top talent (composers, artists, directors, actors and producers) while successfully sourcing potential music concepts for production. This included commissioning original songs from the likes of 50 Cent (“Power”), Nick Cave (“Black Sails”) and Karen O (“Flesh & Bone”). Janine has worked with lauded composers including Bear McCreary, Daniele Luppi, Dave Porter, Kris Bowers, and Ludwig Gorannson.

“It’s all about your relationships; it’s all about how quickly you can get somebody on the phone,” she continued. “I have a great, solid network, and that really makes a difference.”

All of this has made Janine an in-demand speaker at both international film festivals and major music industry expos.

With a higher education combining degrees in advertising and video arts with training in legal aspects of the music business, music publishing and supervising, Janine is for the first time offering her unique raft of talents and abilities in a freelance capacity as Moxie Music.
